I think it’s certainly fair to say that at times car shows can feel very… ‘samey’ - especially within the modified car scene; Where the usual setup is a park-and-pose style show (with a few notable exceptions of course) whereby it can become very tedious after the second or third lap of the show, seeing very similar cars of a varying standard parked up as if it were just one very large pay-and-display.
Occasionally however, some shows come along and break that mould. One such show is the ‘Retro Rides Weekender’ - sister show to the famous Retro Rides Gathering held at Shelsey Walsh hillclimb, the weekender mixes static displays across both sides of the well-known venue with almost constant on-track action from a variety of styles and classes of car; Meaning that no matter where you turned, there was something waiting to grab your attention.
Whilst the Saturday show did seem fairly quiet to start with, it soon got into full swing with a thriving mix of hot-rods, JDM tuner cars and Rally heroes, all at one single event. Pure heaven for the petrolhead. The eclectic mix of scenes at this show is exactly what makes it so fantastic however; There is no disagreements over who has the lowest car, debates about finance or the usual issues of jealousy and cliquey-ness that can befall some of the well-known modified car shows - people just turned up, admired the varied displays, appreciated each of the styles on show and the engineering that goes into perfecting these cars, and generally had a very good time - exactly what a show is supposed to be about!
Sadly we were unable to attend on the Sunday this year, however rest assured we will be going back next year!
